A kind word to one
in trouble is often like a switch in a railroad track. . .an inch between wreck
and smooth sailing. – Henry Ward Beecher
(1813-1887)
My Grandaddy lost money in the stock
market crash of 1929. He vowed-and-declared never to own anything again he
couldn’t touch. He was Welsh and lived in West Tennessee near Nashville. He
owned a furniture store, a bank, a farm, and raised cattle.
My auntie brought her new lawyer-husband, from Denver, home to meet her Daddy. He wanted
to show them the new calves for spring, so he drove an old car down a dirt road, out to the fields.
Grandaddy turned his head to talk to his new son-in-law in the back seat and proceeded to drive into
a ravine.
“Whoa! Looky here, we’re in a ditch!” Grandaddy took things in stride, drove back onto the road, and laughed. Then, he proceeded to show my uncle the little curly-headed calves of which he was so proud. He died when I was five years old; I wish I’d grown up with him.
“Only people who try make mistakes.” I do have the memory of his stories which enrich my life.
What a wonderful approach to mistakes, “Whoa! Looky here!”
Aloha love,
Carla
