WHERE IS YOUR PLACE IN THE WORLD AND WHY?

A kind word to one in trouble is often like a switch in a railroad track. . .an inch between wreck and smooth sailing.                                                                                                                                                             – Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887)

My students are trying to figure out where they are going to belong after graduation. Some already know. There are 120 freshman engineering students registered for fall term in a school of less than 1,800 students. Some are in bio-med or veterinary science. Others are improving their skill sets in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) so they are prepared for future careers. Our grandfathers’ generation retired after working for the same company for 40 years. Many of these businesses came out of the Industrial Revolution and early 20th century inventions.

This generation may retrain four or five times because over 50% of the jobs they will hold aren’t invented yet. By 2030, some careers may exist like: climate change scientist; rocket design architect; autonomous vehicle designer, hazardous waste engineer, the list expands daily. Less and less are we are tied to location. Musicians are always doing gigs, now work-for-hire people may be in gig-mode as well.

In the olden days when I was in high school, there were no girls in sports. Letter jackets were only for boys in sports. Today, flag-football is a sport in the Olympics, women go to college on a variety of sports scholarships, and letter jackets are available for 4.0 grades, theater, band, orchestra, and choir, speech and debate, etc. Culinary arts and science students can earn their own white jackets for excellence in their fields. Many high school organizations study 21st century technology to take over our farms, food, agriculture, robotics, water and soil management, and businesses. Our teenagers are connected to the nation and the world. They have high emotional-IQ’s and environmental awareness to work their way towards a peaceful planet. I’m so very proud of them!

Aloha love,

Carla
