A kind word to one in trouble is often like a switch in a railroad track. . .an inch between wreck and smooth sailing.
– Henry Ward Beecher
(1813-1887)
For some reason, the word retirement conjures up triggers for some Baby Boomers. I found when I replaced the word with full-time writer, I breathed a sigh of relief. I’m in the third year of a five-year plan to publish children’s picture books for four to eight-year-olds. I was surprised how one word writer instead of retiree changed my whole attitude! I reflected on the journey to come and found myself terrified and thrilled. One new word gave me hope, determination, and companionship with others on a shared-journey.
I joined organizations, took classes, got my work edited and critiqued, went to my friends’ book signings, participated in international and national zoom-meetings, and joined my local Chamber of Commerce. I belong to diverse groups and have multicultural experiences to put into my stories. What a broadening experience a new career can be! At 19, I was master-of-the-universe and would never have gone into education like my family. Ha! Guess who has the last laugh?
Aloha love,
Carla
