I learned in science this week that redwood trees have shallow root systems compared to other types of trees. I thought to be so tall, their taproot and root systems would run deep. Not so. I was wrong! Redwood trees bind together in groves, with their roots entwined under the surface, weak and strong together. They withstand the forces of nature besieging them. They hold on tight to each other’s roots and are anchored in the earth. Grounded.
We need to be grounded together to withstand sorrow, to offer mindful compassion to those who are suffering. We are bound together, under this earth, in our humanity. Educators teach other people’s children who have been placed in our care. Teachers are grounded in our communities locally and nationally. School counselors, administrators, librarians, coaches, custodians, lunchroom people, grounds and building maintenance, techs, crossing guards and playground supervisors, bus drivers, resource officers, how many individuals are woven into the taproots of our schools? Thousands! We thank them to reach and teach our children. We thank them to weave roots into our communities so we can stand like emotional-redwoods against days of sorrow so we can grow beyond our circumstances and give hope to our leaders of the future.
