COMPARTMENTALIZE: IT REALLY WORKS!

A kind word to one in trouble is often like a switch in a railroad track. . .an inch between wreck and smooth sailing. – Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887)
A useful tool for me when faced with overwhelming conditions is to compartmentalize. I’m tactile so I cut up 4x6 cards, write down the situation, and place it into one of two baskets: Hopeless & Done and Hope for Things Yet to Come.
When my husband died a few years ago, I lost my one acre of land on a river now worth almost $500,000, and at age 68, two-thirds of my inheritance. All are gone. Hopeless & Done. My first children’s picture book is with a graphic designer being formatted for eBooks and paperbacks. I have a launch plan. I have a Schools and Libraries Marketing Plan. My first chapter book of historical fiction in post-World War II Europe is scheduled for late-2024. All of those pieces go into the Hope for Things Yet to Come basket.
These two baskets keep my executive-cortex functioning and allow me to think clearly through the distress. I prioritize. I do the-next-right-thing. I call my accountability partners and listen to their wise reflections. I laugh, eat good food, exercise, and rest. I face the future with a calm trust that everything is exactly the way it is supposed to be. (sooooo very hard!) I’m growing, changing, and listening.
Aloha love,
Carla
