A
kind word to one in trouble is often like a switch in a railroad track. . .an
inch between wreck and smooth sailing. – Henry Ward Beecher
(1813-1887)
The
sketchbook assignments in high school art were: #1 Draw five views of the
same object on one page and have them interact. #2 Draw a shiny object and
everything reflected in it.
Wow!
What if I changed my perspective of situations and looked for patterns of
interaction? Would I be more open-minded and perhaps a more creative problem-solver?
I think so.
How
about this one? Do I see everything
reflected in people and situations? Do I really look at my shiny object of
human behavior? 7% of communication is words. What have I missed in the other
93%? Other parts are vocal tone and inflection, gestures, and body-language.
(Mehrabian, 2020). I need to listen and observe all parts before jumping to
conclusions. Teachers can look across a classroom and discern student activity
in a heartbeat. Our job is to create and preserve safe-learning environments.
We watch as well as listen.
I
love the artist’s reflection of noticing everything in a shiny object and being
able to see five different views of a situation or person.
Aloha
love,
Carla
