SEL #1 Self-Awareness

The great virtue in life is real courage that knows how to face facts and live beyond them.

                                                                                                               –D. H. Lawrence (1885 – 1930)

It came as a surprise when I was hit with the sorrows as I watched Season 15 of a familiar family saga. It’s a red flag for me that something in the plot or characters’ reactions has triggered frozen pain or frozen needs. I call them emotional-ice cubes. Some are long buried and simply have not been discovered in my recovery process. Healing is not a straight line and can take time to explore what has been stuffed down for decades. No judgment. The stuffing was a survival tool then, and this is now. I’m strong enough, have enough tools, friends, connections, and healing to allow these emotional-ice cubes to melt. I journal and add to my gratitude lists.

Are there more emotional ice-cubes? Probably. If so, do I need to find them now? No. I watched 18 seasons of another saga and watched it again, during covid, until those tears were no more. Ice cubes will start to melt when I am aware enough to recognize triggers: I listen; journal; do grief-processing; and stay connected to my community. I use my recovery tools built after years of listening to people whose stories have helped me to heal.

Aloha love,

Carla
