I am committed to being an effective member of the global digital community by writing children’s picture books on feelings and emotions, or social-emotional learning (SEL).
These books work to
help children understand themselves and their place in the world and to enrich
academic development.
The 5 SEL Competencies are: Self-Awareness, Social-Awareness, Self-Management, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making. CASEL.org
The 7 Competencies for Technology in Education are:
Empowered Learner, Global Collaborator, Digital Citizen, Creative Communicator,
Knowledge Constructor, Computational Thinker, and Innovative Designer. ISTE.org

Relationship Skills
High school
and college students who study digital technology, coding, robotics, etc. are
graded against standards and competencies. Part of this criterion is being able
to function effectively on teams by having strong relationship skills, or social-emotional
learning (SEL).
Education
is far more inclusive today than it was when I was in school. I had been taught
to read visually, “See Spot run.” Reading by ear is now an accepted learning
practice; fluency and vocabulary improve, and comprehension can increase by
76%. My husband was a drummer with photographic audio recall and could play a
song by ear, but his visual comprehension was poor. He hired a tutor when he
went through nursing school—he could do the complicated math and chemistry
formulas, but the thick chapters of visual material gave him trouble.
Our
children face prolific perils in the 21st century. There are 10 elegant
solutions to every problem. I can only think of one or two, but when I
contact my accountability partners--like King Solomon of old who had five wise
counselors--we come up with almost all 10 elegant solutions.
Aloha love,
Carla
